Between Rock is a series of environmental sculptures that undergo a metamorphosis into stone by actively absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. By merging artistic expression with ecological responsibility, each work serves as a testament to the potential of art-making to benefit the environment.

Handsculpted in natural lime, plant shives, rock-forming minerals and clay, this work draws inspiration from Siobhán’s stonemasonry heritage, an interest in ecological building processes and the rich cultural history embedded within local raw materials.

The vessel-like forms originate from stones and rock formations along the south coast of Ireland. They are a result of a slow, layered process that employs traditional techniques to establish a tangible connection between the artist, the materials and its origin in the landscape.

Each piece has been meticulously hand-polished with a stone, adding a distinct tactile and painterly quality that enhances the inherent beauty of the materials used.

Siobhán Joyce (b. 1986) is an Irish artist based in the Blackwater valley of county Waterford in Ireland. Siobhán graduated from the Limerick School of Art & Design in 2008 and gained extensive experience working throughout Europe. In 2022, Siobhán returned to her native Ireland to pursue a professional art practice, with the intention of reconnecting with and drawing inspiration from the diverse rural landscapes that she grew up in.

Ecological material inquiry is an integral part of her process, combining artistic fieldwork and material research with outdoor and indoor studio practice. Through the exploration of local raw materials that hold cultural and historical significance, Siobhán utilises traditional techniques to form sculptural artworks and objects that reflect on themes of environmentalism and human nature relations.

Siobhán's current exploration has led her to work with natural lime, plant shives and clay. These materials serve as the foundation for her sculptural series Between Rock, which undergoes a metamorphosis into stone by actively absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. The artist perceives each series as an intricate interplay between artistic intention, environmental discourse, and the inherent qualities of natural materials.
