Shingi Matemera was born in Zimbabwe on June 1, 1982. He is a very talented abstract artist who started woodcarving at the age of 6 at Tengenenge Gallery in Guruve. His father Bernard Matemera, one of the pioneers of Shona art, lived there. Shingirai received his main inspiration from his work at Tengenenge. Unlike his father's work, much of his figures are abstract and possess his distinctive style. He is able to work in a variety of media, but specializes mainly in serpentine.
