Mimmo Rotella, all’anagrafe Domenico Rotella (Catanzaro, 7 ottobre 1918 – Milano, 8 gennaio 2006), è stato un artista italiano, considerato uno dei protagonisti della scena artistica della seconda metà del XX secolo. La sua figura è legata al movimento del Nouveau Réalisme e della Pop Art internazionale. Rotella sperimenta molte tecniche nella sua vicenda artistica, ma per arrivare alla sua ultima serie (le Nuove icone) la sua indagine prende inizio studiando i grandi maestri del Novecento. Nei primi anni della sua carriera utilizza tecniche pittoriche tradizionali, ispirandosi al Cubismo, al Futurismo e all’Astrattismo di Vasilij Kandinskij, approdando a uno stile astratto-geometrico. Nel maturare sempre più consapevolezza, l’interesse si avvicina alla grafica pubblicitaria, fino ad allinearsi con le ricerche della Pop Art americana. La galleria romana La Tartaruga, oltre ad aver supportato da subito Rotella, è la prima galleria che espone i famosi décollages, una delle sue prime serie. Per realizzarli, l’artista stacca letteralmente pezzi di manifesti appesi sui muri delle città, per poi incollarli sulle tele. Il risultato finale sono composizioni frammentate, spezzate, proprio come il nostro immaginario collettivo. La società dei consumi è continuamente bombardata da immagini pubblicitarie (non solo) e l’opera vuol far riflettere anche su questo concetto. Con i décollages Rotella compie un recupero del manifesto pubblicitario, contro la società consumistica. Nel 1958 passa a realizzare i décollages figurativi, ritraendo volti di alcune stelle del cinema, diventate vere e proprie icone.
