Retable d'Isenheim (1516) Painting by Matthias Grünewald

Matthias Grünewald was a German Renaissance painter, born around 1470 in Würzburg and died in 1528 in Halle. Although few details of his life are known, it is known that he worked mainly in Alsace and Franconia.

Grünewald was a highly respected artist of his time, especially for his religious paintings. He worked closely with the architect Nikolaus Gerhaert from Leyden to decorate the chapel of the hospital of St. Anton in Issenheim in Alsace.

Grünewald's most famous work is the Issenheim Altarpiece, a masterpiece of late Gothic art. This altarpiece was created for the hospital chapel of St. Anton and depicts the crucifixion of Christ with great emotional intensity and great attention to detail.

Grünewald's work is considered an expression of the mystical spirituality of the early Protestant Reformation. His paintings are dark and intense, often reflecting pain and suffering. His use of light and shadow is particularly notable, creating a dramatic effect that influenced many later artists.

Although Grünewald was largely forgotten after his death, his work was rediscovered in the 19th century and has since been considered one of the greatest examples of German Renaissance art.
