The lighthouse of Cordouan stands on a plateau in the foothills of the Gironde. The distance to the north and south shore is about seven kilometers each. The lighthouse belongs to the commune of Le Verdon-sur-Mer in Médoc. It is white, 68 meters high and the diameter at the foot is 16 meters. His fire is at 60 meters high. It is produced by a high-pressure discharge lamp with a power of 250 watts. Its range is 22 nautical miles.
The tower has six floors. On the ground floor is the portal, on the first floor the so-called "Königswohnung". On the second floor there is a chapel, which is used for weddings. These three floors are located in the oldest part of the tower dating from 1611. The floors Three to Six are located in the construction completed in 1790. On the sixth floor is the fire.
Since 1862, the tower has been a monument historique. During the summer months it can be visited from Le Verdon.
The lighthouse has been registered as a candidate for the World Cultural Heritage since 1 February 2002 in the tentative list.
