Edouard Manet Pop art by Hans Veltman. Édouard Manet, born January 23, 1832 in Paris and died April 30, 1883 in Paris, was an important French painter and printmaker of the late 19th century. A precursor of modern painting, freed from academicism, Édouard Manet is wrongly considered to be one of the fathers of Impressionism: he is distinguished from it by the fact that he is concerned with reality and uses little or no new color techniques and the special treatment of light. However, he approaches it with some recurring themes such as portraits, seascapes, Parisian life and still lifes, while painting genre scenes in a personal way, in the first period, Spanish subjects such as Velasquez and the odalisques of Titian. He refused to study law and failed in his career as a naval officer. The young Manet entered the studio of the painter Thomas Couture in 1850 where he completed his training as a painter before leaving in 1856. In 1860, he presented his first paintings, in particular the Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Auguste Manet.
