For the last couple of weeks, I have been concentrating on cataloguing my artwork and I got thinking about whether I could represent all of my changing styles and interests, from childhood to the present day and combine them into a single image. As a child, I was always doodling, which meant that my work always tended to be abstract and as my life went on it seemed only natural for me to be interested in the language of art, that is I was more interested in what was happening on the surface than what the image was portraying. This voyage of discovery has sent me in many different directions, far too many to write about here. It may seem obvious but the main thing I have learnt is that every single mark in a picture should be there because of a conscious decision that was made by the artist, just one bad mark can send you in the wrong direction, not always a bad thing to happen but I find it usually leads to disappointment in the end. Anyway here is my first attempt, you could say it’s an autobiography of my art.

I am a full-time artist, trained at Falmouth School of art. My work is basically all about the study of the Language of art. I believe that all artists use the same language no matter what their style is, it could be expressionism or it could be life drawing or hard-edge abstraction, the language used is the same, the only difference is the composition. My work is a bit like studying a dictionary before writing a book.

Always in the back of my mind is the freedom that I had when I was a child who picked up a crayon, for the first time and started to make marks on a piece of paper. It could be said that I have been trying all my life to get back to that point, but with the knowledge that I have gained over the years.

After leaving Art School and hitting the real world I soon discovered that it was not possible to make a living from my art, I did not want to be one of those poor struggling artists who believed that the world owed them a living. It was at this time that I decide to work at any job and save money in the hope that I could become self-sufficient. It was at this time that I moved to London where work was easy to come by and at the same time to be close to all the galleries that London had to offer. I had many different jobs from warehouse work, and labouring on building sites to being a crew member on a charter yacht.

Well to cut a long story short, it took me 30 years to be in a position where I could finally say that I had sufficient funds to follow my dreams, I sold my house and anything of value and moved back to Cornwall, to the town of Falmouth where I  started my art education and 15 years on I am happy to say that I am living the life of an artist.
