Je suis parti d’une photo glamour de Marlene Dietrich. J’ai pris quelques éléments vifs de la beauté de cette icône : une ligne de cils épais tombante, une partie de bouche rouge vif, sa coiffure impeccable – des repères qui font d’elle ‘la Venus blonde’. La couleur argent, le blanc crémeux m’ont emmené dans une ambiance irréelle enfumée, comme dans un souffle de tabac blond. La déconstruction m’a incité à donner plus forme à sa personnalité qu’à son apparence : la force, la détermination et l’engagement de cette femme de tête. Je l’ai réalisé en même temps qu’un portrait d’un enfant innocent que j’ai fondu dans l’arrière plan : Little Adolphe.
Marlène Dietrich s’est engagée contre le nazisme dès les années 1930, et a participé activement à la Seconde Guerre mondiale entre 1944 et 1945, rendant célèbre la chanson Lili Marleen, elle obtient en 1947 la médaille de la Liberté, plus haute distinction militaire américaine que peut recevoir un civil. Le nom New Gold Paint (nouvelle peinture dorée) est ce qu’il est. J’avais acheté un nouveau tube de peinture, qui, à la caisse du magasin, s’est avéré très cher. Il y a du vrai or dedans.
