About Waterlily ecosystem:
The 'Urbani' pond is one of my cornerstones. Ex quarry on the bank of the Metauro river, now is colonized by a rich population of insects, amphibians and birds. In recent years some local naturalistic associations have built fantastic observatories for nature photography: you can go there and sit and take pictures without interfering.
Even when I don't have a particular project in mind, it’s a pleasure to stop for a visit. I can be sure to come home with a notebook full of ideas.
This study of a hypothetical Nymphaea alba ecosystem is the development of one of these ideas. I was impressed by the depth to which the stems descended, and by the number of creatures that darted between them. Then, looking at the notes I had taken, I was impressed that all the themes somehow hinted at the ephemerality of the passing time.
At that moment I decided that mass of confused notes should become a painting.
As usual, I started with a preparatory sketch on parchment paper to test the colours and the texture of the leaves.

Cinzia Marotta is a nature oil painter living and working in Umbria, Italy. Her realistic, but somewhat magical style is grounded by hard research and a scientific approach, aimed at capturing the mysterious, dark side of a natural world in stark contrast to an anthropocentric vision of our reality and culture.
As a teen, she studied in the atelier of famous Italian painter Pietro Sabatini, but then life took on a different path. After twenty years as an AD in a small company, she dropped everything to return to her art.
