Created especially for the exhibition, the sculpture Black Circle (2019) follows on from formal and symbolic research on the circle (see Golden Circle or Cycles). If a golden light emanates from Golden Circle, here it is all the power of black that radiates. The paintings of Pierre Soulages (1919 *) are inevitably remembered to us since they are of those who knew how to make black a deep and warm color. On the other hand, the use of charcoal as a raw material or even as a raw pigment recalls the work of the Korean Lee Bae (1956 *) whose work Christophe Bregnard did not yet know at the time of the exhibition in Porrentruy. Charcoal imposed itself on him as an element of contrast. It contrasts with the matte whites of the ceramic bouquets that make up Dead Sea (2019) and symbolizes the mark, the crust, the scar left by the fires which loosely clear the great American forests.

Christophe Bregnard is a contemporary Swiss artist. Attracted as much by the recovery of objects (wheel rims, steam baskets, wedding globes) as by contemporary materials (resin, lacquer, polystyrene), the artist is primarily interested in the questions raised by the work. Some of his sculptures evoke plausible three-dimensional objects such as a wine barrel, or an old bulb, while others do not use any known vocabulary.

Nature plays an essential role in Bregnard approach. It offers him a meditative setting from which he draws his inspiration and sometimes even the raw material of his creations (peacock feathers, blue thistles, wood mushrooms). Cut, sanded, caressed, the slats of wood submit to the artist's requirements and become, under his hands, the imprint left by a flower, a giant halo or a desert.

Christophe Bregnard has exhibited all across Europe and won the Lachat Prize for Visual Arts in 2018. Numerous key galleries and museums such as Laurent Marthaler Contemporary have featured Christophe Bregnard's work in the past.
