Polydektes (ancient Greek Πολυδέκτης Polydéktēs, German 'the frequent recipient') is in Greek mythology the king of Seriphos, who is petrified by Perseus.
As the brother or half-brother of Diktys - "the net man" (fisherman), who pulls the ark in which Perseus and his mother Danaë were trapped by their father Akrisios onto the beach - he recreates Danaë. However, Diktys and the growing Perseus know how to protect them. Finally, he apparently wants to woo Hippodameia and organizes a banquet (eranos), to which those invited have to bring a horse as a gift so that he does not fall behind the other competitors. He knows full well that Perseus has neither a horse nor the money to get one. When the youthful Perseus shows him something foolhardy – or thoughtless! – offers to name something else, even if it is the head of the Gorgon Medusa, Polydectes quickly agrees, knowing full well that Medusa petrifies anyone who sees her.
Perseus manages to complete this task with the help of the goddess Athena and actually get the requested gift. But Polydectes and those around him don't want to believe him, so Perseus pulls Medusa's head out of his pocket one more and final time. Since then, visitors to the island have been shown this circle of rocks and Seriphos is considered one of the rockiest islands in the Aegean.
