SHAHABUDDIN, was born in 1950 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A graduate of the National Schools of Fine Arts in Dhaka (1973) and Paris (1974-1981), he has lived and worked in the capital since that date. A young student leader, Shahabuddin actively took part in the Bangladesh Liberation Movement in 1971 and received the National Peace Prize (his native country's highest distinction) in 2000. His reputation as an artist is international, several of his works appear in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Bangladesh in Dhaka, but also of the Olympic Museum of Lausanne in Switzerland... His most recent exhibitions took place in France, Spain, India and Bangladesh. Human or animal, the body and its flesh are at the heart of the painter's work. The speed of the line competes with the power of the modeling. Their duel breathes rhythm and intensity into the subject isolated on the coated but bare canvas; its reminder of timelessness. Shahabuddin's painting is the challenge of the living to its erasure. The painter fights: “concentration of means, economy of forces, freedom of action”, says César. History does not tell us that the latter was a painter but his legacy of thought opens a more peaceful path to the man of art on his privileged surface. Each of Shahabuddin’s paintings is a magnificent physical engagement torn from the painter’s creative energy. The very nervous touch amplifies the movement. Violent, impulsive, even exacerbated attitudes transcend reality. The body acts and reveals forces and tensions, efforts and suffering; through him the Promethean myth arises. Shahabuddin's work is a return to the sources which questions both the opposition and the links between body and soul, nature and humanity.
