Davis Lisboa, “Marcel Broodthaers #7", 2017, oil on canvas, 11,8 x 11,8 x 1.57 in (30 x 30 x 3,5 cm)
What/who inspired the work?
Formally I was inspired by the photorealistic paintings by the German artist Gerhard Richter, who collects photographs and paints them in oil on canvas in a very blurred and mysterious style.
Conceptually, I was inspired by a film still from a Broodthaers's video titled "Wax Figures (Jeremy Bentham)", 1974, filmed in London in which the Belgian artist asks questions to a wax figure of the philosopher and jurist Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), one of the founders of the University of London.
This painting shows the moment when Broodthaers asks Bentham: "Do you prefer to dream?"
What do you hope its viewers will think?
The viewers have to know I am creating "The Painting Section From Davis Museum". This group of paintings is divided between portraits and still lifes. All the portraits are only of three artists: Marcel Duchamp, Robert Filliou and Marcel Broodthaers. All the still lifes deal with the three artworks of the mentioned artists which are related with the "artists who created their own museums" narrative: "Boîte-en-valise", "La galerie légitime" and "Musée d'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles ", respectively.
Why did you choose the medium?
I love oil painting because it is a sophisticated, durable and glossy medium. I only use the best materials for my paintings: linen fabrics, Blockx essence of turpentine and linseed oil and Old Holland oil paintings.
This is the only section of the museums in which the works are for sale. Support this project by buying now a painting in Saatchi Art!
