Theseus was an early king of Athens, who slayed the Minotaur in the labyrinth of the Cretan King Minos. He came to represent staunch defense of democracy.
Charles Bargue's classical drawing courses in collaboration with Jean-Léon Gérôme, guided students from plaster casts to the study of great master drawings and then to drawing from the living model.
Among the artists whose work is based on the study of Bargue’s platework is Vincent van Gogh, who copied the complete set in 1880/1881, and again in 1890.
This is my version.
Graphite pencil on paper. 14 × 17 x 0.1. Hand-signed by artist, Initialed in pencil lower left: "PLATE 61 . MEV . XX"
