He was born in the city of Zacatecas on March 25, 1921 and studied at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving 'La Esmeralda', under the tutelage of Juan Cruz, Francisco Zúñiga and Santos Balmori , among others. Later he also dedicated himself to teaching.
An enthusiastic collector of pre-Columbian, primitive, oriental, Greco-Roman and medieval art, as well as graphic art, Coronel belonged to the generation of artists who lived the consummation of the Mexican Renaissance with mural painting.
He moved to Paris, France, where he frequented the workshops of the painter Bremer and the sculptor Brancusi, authors who had a transcendental influence on his production.
His work is inspired by colors of pre-Hispanic and primitive art and is located in a very special expressionism, treated with simplified forms.
His first individual exhibition was held in 1954, and years later he exhibited his work in France, Italy, Japan, the United States. United and Brazil.
He is considered an innovator of Mexican art because his work manifests a violence similar to the mythical portent of ancient Mexican art and shows a world full of hostility and struggle, but also of sensuality and eroticism.
