From an early age, Maryam Shams felt a fascination for the pencil, which she saw as a magical tool. This passion for drawing stayed with her throughout her childhood. After graduating from high school, she was admitted to the Tehran School of Graphic and Decorative Art. However, dissatisfied with the teaching she received, she took the competitive examination for admission to the University of Fine Arts in Teheran.

A year later, driven by her desire to learn and improve, Maryam decided to make her dream come true by moving to Paris. Her arrival in the French capital in September 1979 coincided with a period of political upheaval in Iran. Her first objective was to learn French, followed by preparation for the competitive examination at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts to which she worked hard and passed the exam; thus, graduating with honours five years later.

Attracted by lithography and serigraphy, Maryam deepened her knowledge of these techniques by working for two years in Abraham Hadad's workshops. Wishing also to acquire a deeper theoretical understanding of art, she enrolled at the Sorbonne to study Fine Arts.

Today, Maryam Shams lives and works in France, where she creates artworks that reflect her varied artistic influences, including Abstract expressionism, Action painting, European monochrome and Abstraction. Using mainly ink, pigment and collage on canvas, she explores the infinite possibilities of artistic expression through her creations.
