Gaudaire ha iniziato a dipingere nel 1965 e ha studiato presso l'Ecole Nationale des Métiers d’Art di Parigi tra 1968-1971, ma è durante il suo primo viaggio di studio in Egitto (inverno 1976) che sviluppa con forza il suo lavoro sui segni primordiali.
Nel corso della sua attività di pittore, viaggi di studio lo hanno condotto in Italia, Egitto, Grecia, Stati Uniti, Cina ed Etiopia.

Jean Gaudaire-Thor è nato a Sens nel 1947.
Vive e lavora in Francia e in Italia. Inizia a dipingere e scolpire nel 1965. Viaggi di studio lo portano in Egitto, Grecia, Stati Uniti, Cina, Etiopia. Ma è durante il suo primo viaggio di studio in Egitto nel 1975, che sviluppa il suo lavoro su segni primordiali. Appassionato di archeologia e preistoria, ha saputo costruire la sua opera utilizzando questi linguaggi primitivi e segreti, e creare ponti con la nostra contemporaneità. L'artista combina elementi figurativi a vigorosi segni astratti. Tra i due elementi si instaura una vera e propria osmosi, un rapporto di complementarità. Lo stesso motivo può dar luogo a vari trattamenti come variazioni sullo stesso tema in musica. Dal 1967, il suo lavoro è stato oggetto di oltre 300 mostre personali e collettive in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. È presente in molte collezioni pubbliche e private. (Museo d'arte moderna, Parigi; Biblioteca nazionale, Parigi; Musei Sens; Museo Rimbaud, Charleville Mézières; Fondazione Beyeler, Basilea.)
