Gérard Rombi, a contemporary French artist, is a self-taught creative force whose artistic journey began in childhood with a profound affinity for drawing. Raised in Marseille, Rombi's formative years were marked by a dedicated study of anatomy and an immersion into the realms of painting and sculpture, inspired by the techniques of Renaissance artists.
At the age of 21, driven by a passion for cinema, Rombi created his inaugural cinema poster for Jean-luc Breitenstein's film "Sports." This marked the inception of a prolific career in the world of film advertising.
Relocating to Paris at the age of 23, Rombi joined the renowned Belier advertising agency, where he served as a roughman and storyboarder for an impressive four-year tenure. During this period, he contributed his creative prowess to advertising projects for major brands such as Evian, Aubade, Rosy, Lustucru, and Kronenbourg. Notably, he designed and painted the posters for the "Oasis" advertising campaign featuring Carlos.
Simultaneously working as a freelancer, Rombi crafted and painted numerous cinema posters, showcasing his talent in capturing the essence of films. In 1985, he created posters for notable films such as "Highlander" with Sean Connery and Christophe Lambert, and Oliver Stone commissioned him for the poster of his film "Salvador." His portfolio includes works for films like "Return of the Musketeers" by Richard Fletcher, "Plenty" with Meryl Streep, "Family Council" by Costa Gavras with Johnny Hallyday, "Hunting Party" with James Masson, and "Operation Condor" for Jacky Chan, among others.
The legacy of Gérard Rombi's cinema posters extends beyond the screen, with the original works finding a place in private collections in Los Angeles and Madrid. His artistic journey exemplifies the fusion of self-taught talent, passion for cinema, and a prolific contribution to the visual storytelling of iconic films.
