About the artist:

Willem Karel Rees was a Dutch artist known for his expressionistic and figurative paintings. He was born in Haarlem and studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He started his career as a graphic artist, but later switched to painting.

Rees was part of the Amsterdam School of artists, which was characterized by a distinctive expressionistic style. His paintings often feature bold, vibrant colours and dynamic brushstrokes, conveying a sense of movement and emotion.

Rees' subject matter varied widely, ranging from portraits and still lifes to landscapes and cityscapes. He was particularly interested in capturing the everyday life of people in Amsterdam and other cities, and his works often depict scenes from cafes, streets, and markets.

Rees' work was exhibited widely in the Netherlands and abroad, including at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was a member of the Nederlandse Kring van Tekenaars (Dutch Circle of Artists) and the Amsterdamse Kunstenaarsvereniging De Onafhankelijken (Amsterdam Artists Association The Independents).

Today, Rees is considered one of the leading Dutch expressionist painters of the 20th century, and his work is highly sought after by collectors.
