Christophe Bregnard also likes to work with wood. In
2015, he created Fractal Wood, whose form is inspired
by an old lamp globe found at a flea market.
Having lost its initial function, the strongly
enlarged becomes pure art, with no other function
than to arouse the dream. The Illustrious Starry Night (2017)
a version of Fractal Wood that is fully
covered with black crystal tassels.
Produced expressly for the exhibition at POPA,
the sculpture When the night falls is inspired by a
detail borrowed from Fractal Wood. The artist wanted
a larger room, on a human scale. of a
side of the work, the curved forms offer a
landscape that could be a desert of dunes
with sensual curves, unless it is
the model of a relief whose strata draw
circular patterns. As for the back of the coin, it
is covered with gold leaf. Given its refinement,
this golden wall could also constitute the
front of the work. By playing on beauty and
the interest of the two sides of the sculpture, the artist
invites the viewer to turn around the work,
innocently recalling the meaning of a term
somewhat forgotten technique: the round-bump.
Christophe Bregnard is a contemporary Swiss artist. Attracted as much by the recovery of objects (wheel rims, steam baskets, wedding globes) as by contemporary materials (resin, lacquer, polystyrene), the artist is primarily interested in the questions raised by the work. Some of his sculptures evoke plausible three-dimensional objects such as a wine barrel, or an old bulb, while others do not use any known vocabulary.
Nature plays an essential role in Bregnard approach. It offers him a meditative setting from which he draws his inspiration and sometimes even the raw material of his creations (peacock feathers, blue thistles, wood mushrooms). Cut, sanded, caressed, the slats of wood submit to the artist's requirements and become, under his hands, the imprint left by a flower, a giant halo or a desert.
Christophe Bregnard has exhibited all across Europe and won the Lachat Prize for Visual Arts in 2018. Numerous key galleries and museums such as Laurent Marthaler Contemporary have featured Christophe Bregnard's work in the past.
