These collages have been created using photos and pages and covers of some of my published photobooks, a form of recycling but also giving new life to photographic projects dating back to the 1980s, through the pandemic and up to the present. Not taking photos so much as cutting and pasting what went before.

These shots were taken in Durban when i had a good Nikonos underwater camera which i had bought so that I could record scenes of my scuba diving adventures in the Indian Ocean. However, conditions underwater mostly seemed to be very challenging from a photographic point of view. It was always a matter of choosing to concentrate on safety and breathing, against getting a good shot. I decided safety was more important, so I needed to find an easier environment for underwater photos, and Durban has a seawater swimming pool on the beach, and with strong sunlight, and some willing lifeguards off-duty, I was able to get these shots.

I booked a 6-day visit to Paris, starting on Thursday 12th November, with a list of galleries and museums I wanted to visit, and I had tickets for orchestral concerts at the Garnier Theatre. On my second night, terrorists killed more than 100 people in the city. Luckily I was safe, back in my hotel, watching television when I saw the news as it unfolded. For the next few days Paris was in shock. People were walking around as if in a trance. Galleries, theatres, restaurants and government offices closed down.
I wandered the streets, taking pictures of the architecture, but also spent a few hours with Parisians and folk from all over the world, at the Place de la Liberation, where the atmosphere was unforgettably solemn, sad and also defiant. I took some photos, which will always be a reminder of that awful time.

In the early 1980s I visited my grandmother, aunts and cousins in South Africa. I was a keen amateur photographer at the time and took my camera with me. I visited Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Although this was the time of apartheid, when white people ruled and everyone else had a difficult life, I found that, everywhere I went, black South Africans greeted me with smiles and friendliness. No one ever objected to me taking their photo. I was genuinely moved by their lack of hostility, considering the oppression they would all have experienced in their everyday lives. I look at these images and can still remember how amazed and inspired I was by the openness and humility of the people in the photos.
This was the time before digital and I was using a Pentax SLR camera. The negatives have long since been lost, and what you see are digital copies of original photos. Unfortunately, not the best of reproductions. But I treasure them and wanted to share them.

London's underground system is such an interesting and colourful place for people watching and for looking in the mirror..... I am totally fascinated by the circular mirrors which you can find in many, but not all of the stations.

Every year, come September, the buildings in London, which are not normally open to the general public, throw open wide their doors and invite us all in, to look around, learn something about their architecture, and be amazed. It is called OPEN HOUSE London.
It has become so popular that it is very difficult to enter many of the more iconic buildings unless you queue for hours - which many people do. I am too impatient but am content to walk around (in this case)The City of London, looking up most of the time, trying to fit these large structures into my camera's viewfinder.
Open House was started in 1992 as a small, not-for-profit organisation to promote public awareness and appreciation of London's building design and architecture. The intention was to open up London's splendid buildings to the general public who don't otherwise have access. Open House sees this as a way of helping the wider community to become more knowledgeable, engage in dialogue and make informed judgements on architecture.
The concept has become so successful it has spread to nearly 20 cities worldwide. These are New York, Dublin, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Helsinki, Melbourne, Galway, Barcelona, Slovenia, Chicago, Rome, Lisbon, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Thessaloniki, Limerick, Buenos Aires, with Gdansk-Sopot-Gdynia, Athens, San Diego and Vienna joining in 2014. All cities are part of the Open House Worldwide Family, which strongly holds that the ethos behind the original event remains consistent.

My beautiful England.
In 2008 I discovered TRAVELODGE, a chain of hotels in the UK, which I could afford. They had great offers if you signed up to their newsletter, and suddenly I felt I could get out of London and see the rest of England (I did also go up to Scotland briefly). The other discovery which made travel so attractive was MEGABUS, which could get you from London to Liverpool by train for just one pound sterling. I felt the opportunity to travel was too good to resist and ever since then I have been seeing England - and getting to know the places I visit because I go back again and again - always with my digital camera.
Now, in 2014, I am still a very happy TRAVELODGE customer because, even though those early bargains are no longer offered, their room prices are still the best on the market, and I have always been totally satisfied with the service (double bed, en suite bathroom, toilet, tea and coffee-making facility and TV. Check out time is 12 noon - later than most hotels). I am not paid by them to say all this, but I feel it is because of Travelodge and Megabus that I have been able to see my country, which would not have been possible otherwise. Thanks guys !
So here is the beginning of my collection of photos, taken in the cities of England, as well as in some of the smaller towns. When I first started out, I used to rush to the Cathedrals and snap away, but soon realised that I was just not able to capture the splendour, beauty, and grandeur of these buildings, although I did (mostly) come away with some good photos of the colourful stained glass windows. And a few postcards bought at the Cathedral shop.
For the most part, I would leave the hotel in the morning and just walk, following my instinct - it's amazing what surprises a city can throw your way if you let it. Here, it says, look at this - isn't it worth photographing? Which is why many of my pictures are not of the well-known buildings and structures, but of the less-seen views.
I have spent many, many happy hours, out and about in England, with my camera as my constant (and motivating) companion. I hope you can see in my photos, some of my curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm, as well as the pleasure I have had in taking them.
Thanks for your visit. Do come again.

I really love Kevin's photos. He can produce art with a shadow or a plastic bag. Art is how he looks at things.
Bautiful¡ I love your photos, though not contain portraits of people, you write and describe not only images but it makes the beholder, be part of the moment.
