In my ongoing painting style ‘interwoven landscape’ , landscapes appear covered by a curtain, a veil, lines or stripes, interweavings that allude to our contemporary perception of the world through modern media and its imperfection.
Skadi Engeln is a contemporary German artist known for her exploration of color, form, and the enigma of beauty. Raised in a Catholic family with parents from scientific backgrounds, Engeln was exposed to deep philosophical and inquisitive discussions about life, the universe, and humanity. This environment heavily influenced her artistic expression, shaping her fascination with the complex mysteries of the world.
From 1990 to 1995, Engeln studied at FH Ottersberg, where she focused on sculpture under Robert van de Laar and painting with Michael Kohr and Hermanus Westendorp. Her early work in sculpture later evolved into painting, where she found more freedom to explore themes of dissolution and composition. Engeln also pursued an interest in psychology, gaining insights into the communicative power of colors, forms, and materials, which further influenced her artistic approach.
Engeln’s work includes paintings, woodcuts, and silkscreens, often centered on landscapes and figures. She is particularly interested in how landscapes, constantly in flux due to natural elements like light, water, and weather, reflect the world’s ever-changing nature. Her paintings capture the transition and decomposition of landscapes, aiming to trace the invisible and reveal the transcendence and beauty within.
Her art has been exhibited in prestigious solo and group exhibitions in cities such as Berlin, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Graz, New York, and Molde. Engeln currently lives and works in both Berlin and France, continuing her exploration of the interplay between the visible and the invisible in art and nature.
