Franz Hümpfner is een bekende fotograaf. Met zijn foto's probeert hij altijd de werkelijkheid over te brengen die achter de zichtbare wereld schuilgaat. Voor hem is een camera een hulpmiddel voor zijn artistieke werk, vergelijkbaar met hoe een schilder penselen en verf gebruikt om zijn werken te maken.
Hij past zowel analoge als digitale technieken toe. "Een foto vereist het gevoel van papier", zegt hij, eraan toevoegend dat "de vluchtige weergave op het scherm de sensuele kwaliteit van een foto niet kan overbrengen." Hij maakt ook Zen- of Wabisabi-fotografie, die door zijn eenvoud thema's als de schoonheid, vergankelijkheid en imperfectie van alles wat bestaat bijzonder goed kan uitdrukken. Hij besprak dit soort fotografie ook theoretisch in zijn boek "Photoartfolio 1 - Wabi Sabi Photography."
