Andere Europese kunstenaars markeerden symbolische schilderkunst, met name de Belgische schilder James Ensor en zijn carnavalsfiguren, monsters en skeletten, of de Noor Edvard Munch en zijn beroemde Cry, een visuele uitdrukking van een mentale toestand van wanhoop en horror, zeker een iconisch werk.
