Geboren in Shanghai in 1969, begon Zhang Chunlei's artistieke carrière op jonge leeftijd toen hij in de leer ging bij de beroemde Chinese schilder, meester Jiang Fengbai. In 1992 studeerde hij af aan de Suzhou University School of Arts met een professioneel certificaat in decoratieontwerp. Hij vervolgde zijn artistieke opleiding in Japan in 1995. In 2003 behaalde Zhang zijn MBA aan de University of South Australia. Hij woont en werkt momenteel in Singapore en zijn kunstpraktijk strekt zich uit tussen Singapore en Shanghai, China.
Beïnvloed door de Lao Zhuang-filosofie, die artistieke schoonheid en evenwicht bepleit, bestaat de schildertechniek van Zhang uit het creëren van een reeks strak geweven stippen, lijnen en vlakken, waarbij een doelgerichte formatie wordt weven met afwisselende kleuren. Dit concept van versmelting van figuratieve en abstracte elementen resulteert in een verbluffend kunstwerk.
