Houtskool is een materiaal dat wordt geleverd in de vorm van stokken (dicht bij houtskool), meestal afkomstig van een wilgentak of houtskool (gelijknamige struik) die in een vacuüm verkoold is. Dit materiaal wordt voornamelijk gebruikt om te tekenen. Het maakt het mogelijk om zeer diep zwart te verkrijgen, precieze lijnen, fijn of juist heel breed, afhankelijk van hoe het wordt gebruikt.
