J.L Manuel, a contemporary French artist, embarks on a surreal and offbeat journey where imagination triumphs over reality. Embracing influences from surrealist masters such as Dali, Magritte, Ernst, Bosch, and contemporary artists, Manuel explores the ambivalence of pictorial language with a blend of impulse, distance, and derision.

In the narrative momentum of his works, J.L Manuel intricately weaves together bodies, animals, spaces, and landscapes, creating a rich tapestry of signs that challenge our perception. The artist introduces elements like a meteorite hot air balloon, topless alien saxophonists, elephants, rhinoceroses, chimpanzees, bats, clowns, dancers, and tightrope walkers. These diverse representations form a surreal circus, engaging in allegorical and symbolic narratives.

The circus theme becomes a playground for oxymorons—balance and imbalance, lightness and heaviness, fixity and movement, joy and sadness, appearance and disappearance. Time seems suspended in this unique and timeless universe, where conventions are discarded, and everything is permitted.

J.L Manuel's compositions explore the unconscious and illusion, linking the hallucinatory experience. Through optical disorders and scale tricks, he creates a sensory disorientation that invites viewers to embrace evanescence. The radiant palette emphasizes primary tones, with a focus on the liveliness and luminosity of red, blue, and yellow.

Utilizing computer graphics, Manuel refines his drawings, manipulates compositions, and prints directly onto the canvas before finishing with oil. Agitated lines, cracks, body imperfections, and decorative swirls serve as metaphors for the transitory nature of life. In this complex interplay of mirrors and positive-negative forms, J.L Manuel constructs and fragments portraits, challenging conventional pictorial standards.
