The Polynesian artist was born in Raiatea in 1980, a paradise island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, between Tahiti and Bora Bora. Evrard Chaussoy comes from a family of Chinese origin, his father Joseph Chaussoy is a painter and his mother Marguerite is a seamstress.

Self-taught, he developed a realistic style whose solid colors and contrasts of light leave yet glimpse a whole inner complexity. Inspired by a universal subject, man and his condition, the artist first proceeds by touches which he applies with lively, irregular gestures, always revealing a radiance, an energy around the forms, symbolizing life in each of us.

Because it is indeed the Polynesian, the Polynesian, who populate the paintings of Evrard Chaussoy. Exploring the contrast between the harshness of a life as a fisherman, the wear and tear of a hand that has braided delicate flowers for a lifetime, and the personal, intimate search for serenity, peace, the need for nature, light, of wandering and wide open spaces, the artist points out the beauty of a world that we don't want to see disappear.

Capturing these subtle emotions, once mastered in charcoal, through a lively and impassioned painting today, Evrard Chaussoy delivers himself to a contrasting practice, between the large brush strokes, wide of acrylic, almost coarse, and the lightness, the transience of a knife caressing his paintings.

Inspired primarily by the Polynesia he lives in, he draws on what history and traditions have left, to persist at the same time as they contain their breath to give way to Modern times. Having fun as often as possible slipping in details that are unmistakable about what is close to his heart, this committed Artist subtly denounces the shortcomings of this evolving society.

Many say that there is nostalgia in the paintings of Evrard Chaussoy, others will say that there is sensuality. Perhaps it is precisely his view of Polynesian culture or the echo of an island reality where he feels serene?
