De overgang van figuratieve schilderkunst naar niet-objectieve schilderkunst en 'metafysische' kleurveldschilderkunst werd uiteindelijk mogelijk gemaakt door invloed van het overweldigende oeuvre van de Amerikaanse schilder Mark Rothko. De uitdaging lag in het samensmelten van spontane expressiviteit, meditatieve diepgang en kleur- en vormharmonie. Uiteindelijk komt het erop aan een verband te leggen tussen het sensuele en het metafysische en een stille, contemplatieve bewustzijnsstaat te ontwikkelen.
