Riprodurre un'immagine di Campagna, montagne, foreste, città, spiagge... è l'obiettivo di molti fotografi. Nicéphore Niépce , considerato l'inventore della fotografia, combina tre processi per fissare le immagini su lastre di latta ricoperte di bitume di Giudea. La prima fotografia della storia rappresenta un paesaggio, una veduta della sua proprietà a Saint-Loup-de-Varennes in Saône-et-Loire (Francia). Louis Arthur Ducos du Hauron, un altro precursore della fotografia, inventore della tricromia che permette di ottenere foto policrome, scatterà dagli anni '70 molte foto di vedute della città di Agen (Francia) a "colori".
Un altro inventore, Arthur Batut , intraprende la costruzione di un aquilone che doterà di una camera oscura il cui otturatore viene attivato automaticamente dalla combustione di uno stoppino. Nel 1888 ottenne la prima fotografia aerea della storia fotografando la città di Labruguière nel Tarn (Francia).
