Italo Somma nace en Nápoles en 1957, lugar que marca al artista, pues tiene un profundo sentimiento de origen. El mayor de cuatro hermanos siempre se sintió atraído hacia las artes, aunque por compromiso familiar estudia Geología en la Universidad de Nápoles (1976-1980). Fiel a su amor por la música, y en especial por la guitarra, en el 82 viaja a Washington D. C., donde reside durante más de dos años para estudiar el Blues. Posteriormente se traslada a Londres, donde perfecciona su técnica con la guitarra hasta el 84. Vuelve a Nápoles e, inclinado hacia las artes plásticas, estudia Bellas Artes y hace diversos cursos de Grabado y Litografía. Allí comienza su estudio de la música al color, con una larga investigación sobre la sinestesia, componente fundamental para comprender la obra del pintor napolitano. Para ello viaja y reside entre su ciudad natal y Andalucía, donde sigue enamorándose y perfeccionando su inclinación flamenca. El 18 de julio del 1994 aterriza para unas vacaciones en la isla de Tenerife, donde formó una familia y reside desde entonces.
Italo Somma es un artista in extenso. Su personalidad se prolonga más allá de un simple catálogo de conocimientos. Porque es algo más que un pintor, algo más que un músico y algo más que un artista plástico.
