Josef Hirthammer is one of the most versatile artists of our time.

Born in 1951 in Bad Reichenhall

Josef Hirthammer consciously evades any categorization. His diverse work does not allow for classic pigeonholing. Diversity is his trademark. Painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital painting, sculpture and installations are his design media. Stringently pursued diversity characterizes his multifaceted forms of expression and philosophies. He is considered one of the most versatile artists of our time and has created a variety of works of art in the 40 years of his artistic activity.

His works include delicate and subtle drawings and prints, expressive and large-format paintings, objects in wood, Wax, stone and metal, sensitive work in and with nature, documentary and abstract photo work through to digital designs. Over the years, he has intensified and continually redesigned the two main areas of “contemporaries” and “nature” as primary creative fields.

Since 1970, Josef Hirthammer has had numerous exhibitions at home and abroad and has taken part in them several times around the world took part in the most important art fair “ART Basel” and made him a sought-after young artist of his time. In 2012, several works were included in the Würth Collection.

The artist's current work is based on the premise of rediscovering the ideals of the Renaissance. He places nature at the center of intensive observation. The nature studies of Albrecht Dürer and contemporaries arose from an idealizing interest  in nature; his nature studies are characterized by emotion and admiration.

Hirthammer sees his works as documentation of the current flora that we humans will systematically reduce and ultimately eradicate. They are admirable parts of the nature that surrounds us, our living space. Man is destroying his own livelihood with his eyes open. Greed, egoism and hunger for power destroy flora and fauna and ultimately his own species. In order to give Homo Sapiens a real chance of survival on our planet in the future, the most important task is to bring nature and humans into harmony.
