Her works reflected her belief that art had the power to revolutionize public space. Her use of accessible imagery and direct addressing of the general public was controversial and led to her dismissal as a graphic arts professor at the Universidad de Chile.

Beatriz Gonzalez was a transgressor. Born during the beginning of Pop art and raised under totalitarian rule in Colombia, she assimilated her two cultures into a single body of work. She incorporated references to her native country and art history, as well as to social unrest. In 1962, she co-founded the group Arte Nuevo in her native country. Her early work resisted dictator Alvarado's preference for indigenous art, parodying sexist depictions of women and the commodification of their bodies.
